Excerpt from A Tour on the Prairies by Washington Irving (1835) Holmes Peak  The American will be located atop Holmes Peak, seven miles northwest of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. Holmes Peak is the highest point in five counties, rising up above rolling hills and vast stretches of natural grassland in the Osage Hills. Once called Bald Hill, this rich historical site was an important Indian observation point used by hunting parties as they surveyed the land for buffalo. It was also a landmark for the Indians and early settlers. In 1832, the author Washington Irving toured the Bald Hill area and wrote about his trip in a book called A Tour on the Prairies (1835).
